An Interview
with Rebekah Griffin
Rocco: So, how do you feel that your show
went?
Rebekah: I thought that it went very well.
Rocco: Why do you say that?
Rebekah: A lot of people came out for that
first Friday, and it was very busy and a lot of people from the area as
well as from other areas saw my work.
Rocco: So why did you choose the paintings
that you picked?
Rebekah:I picked those paintings because I
felt that they best represented what I've painted in different
time periods.
Rocco: So what kind of paintings do you
see yourself doing in the future?
Rebekah: I...don't know I think I'm moving
away from doing landscapes, so I'm probably going to be doing more
abstract stuff still using things from nature though, but with more
focus on color and texture rather than landscapes.
Rocco: Do you think that you'd ever do any
portraits?
Rebekah: I don't know that I would ever do
portraits, I don't think that I would.
Rocco: You don't see alot of portraits
anymore...How many paintings do you have?
Rebekah: I have...probably about sixteen.
Rocco: Would you say that you finish
paintings quickly?
Rebekah: No .
Rocco : How long does it usually take?
Rebekah: If I work straight through on it,
which I usually don't, it takes me about a week.
Rocco: Tell me about the paintings that
your working on now.
Rebekah: Now I'm working on a painting
that is on four separate canvasses.
Rocco: What do you mean "four seperate
canvasses?"
Rebekah: Four separate canvasses, and the
painting is continuous; it kind of connects from each canvass.
Rocco: Like a puzzle?
Rebekah: Kind of like a puzzle, yeah.
Rocco: So do you plan on selling them
individually or as one whole piece?
Rebekah: I haven't really decided, because
I originally thought that I could sell them individually but then i just
think that the piece looks a lot better- I mean they look good
individually but I think that the piece looks like what I wanted it to
look like when it's hanging all together so I'll probably will end up
selling it as one.
Rocco: I see...How do you decide on
prices?
Rebekah: Some of them I price by how much
I like them...most of them I price by the amount of time it took me to
make the piece.
Rocco: How long have you been painting?
Rebekah: I guess I started painting in...I
started painting regularly in 1999
Rocco: Any reason in particular that you
started painting?
Rebekah: No, I've always liked it, and I
found that once i took the time to do it, I really liked what was
happening with it.
Rocco: When do you think that you're going
to do another show?
Rebekah: I think that I'd probably like to
wait until fall to do another show, unless something else comes along,
but I'd rather wait until the fall because there are more people around
then.
Rocco: When do you think you'll be
finished with your four piece painting?
Rebekah: I hope to be done with that in
about a month. i kind of changed it halfway through so I have to go back
and redo all that stuff.
Rocco: So what's your plan for the future
with this?
Rebekah: With painting?
Rocco: Yeah.
Rebakah: Well, I'd like to have a space
one day where I can have a small gallery...that would be something that
I would be interested in doing other than that, just keep doing shows
and see what happens.
Rocco: So, let's get back to the show, you
had a good turn out, a lot of people were there, it was from six to
nine...but we stayed later.
Rebekah: yeah, we stayed to about nine-
thirty.
Rocco: well, that's 'cause so many people
were there.
Rocco: So, tell us a little bit about
yourself.
Rebekah: A little bit about myself?
Rocco: Yeah.
Rebekah: Well, I am finishing up school
right now; finishing my bachelor's degree-
Rocco: -In what?
Rebekah: I have a double major in
psychology and english.
Rocco:- And English?
Rebekah: And I'm getting ready to take my
GRE's
Rocco: What is that?
Rebekah: Graduate entrance exams to go to
grad school.
Rocco: Which school?
Rebekah: I'm not really sure yet, i think
I might stick with Temple because their grad programs are pretty good.
Rocco: So you plan on pursuing art as a
profession?
Rebekah: I don't know...I think I would
say "Yes" to that but also plan on pursuing other things as well I. plan
on doing both things.
Rocco: How do you feel about working with
Name No One Man?
Rebekah: I like working with the site; I
think that it's a good outlet for all of our artists and I think it's
been doing really well so far.
Rocco: How do you feel about the other
artists on the site?
Rebekah: I think that all of our artists
are good.
Rocco: Do you prefer oils or acrylics?
Rebekah: I prefer acrylics.
Rocco: Big Canvasses or small?
Rebekah: I prefer big.
Rocco: Any reason in particular about
that?
Rebekah: I just like bigger paintings and
I like working on a bigger canvass- I just thing I paint better on a
bigger canvass.
Rocco: Now how do you paint? I mean like,
where? What environment do you prefer? Table, floor...
Rebekah: I paint on the floor.
Rocco: Oh, really?
Rebekah: mm-hmm
Rocco: Does that hurt your back?
Rebekah: Yes it does.
Rocco: Oh wow...Now you have cats do they
ever run across your paintings?
Rebekah: mm-hmm....usually they don't
manage to run across them cause I catch them, but they do eat the
brushes and drink the paint water.
Rocco: And what of brushes; what kind do
you like?
Rebekah: I like natural bristle brushes
Rocco: Rectangular, circular...?
Rebekah: I like flat brushes...usually
rather shorter than longer. Depending upon the painting.
Rocco: Now, I've noticed alot of oddly
shaped canzasses, do you ever see yourself using one of those?
Rebekah: I'd like to try the round
canvasses. I'd also like to start painting on wood and metal.
Rocco: I've often thought of that myself.
Rocco: Well, Do you have any words for
your fans?
Rebekah: Any words? No I don't have any
words really. Well I have to get fans first.
Rocco: Well I think you've got fans; You
get plenty of positive feedback on the website- everybody loves your
work...Well, I guess that concludes our interview, Thank you for talking
to me.
